What’s the Craic, God?
Theatre 118 presents 'What's the Craic, God?' A darkly comic coming-of-age play by Rebecca Donovan
In small-town Kildare, 17-year-old Aoife McDonagh is suffocating under the weight of Catholic guilt, family dysfunction, and a secret she can barely admit to herself. With a vodka bottle in one hand and a cigarette in the other, she navigates the chaos of Irish teenage life – dodgy house parties, judgmental nuns, and the crushing expectations of being her mother's "last hope."
But when a kiss with the effortlessly cool Erin Kelly turns her world upside down, Aoife must confront the terrifying question: can you be queer and still be good? As her escape to London looms and Susan Boyle's voice echoes through her alcoholic father's nightly rituals, Aoife's desperate prayers to God take an unexpected turn.
This raw, hilarious, and heartbreaking solo performance captures the fierce urgency of teenage rebellion colliding with small-town Ireland's suffocating traditions. From confession booths to boiler-top revelations, from funeral celebrations to Penneys lingerie departments, Donovan's script crackles with authentic dialogue and devastating wit.
Performed by Rebecca Donovan
Directed by Georgia Nelson
Produced by Tom Brogan for Theatre 118
